Micro Teaching of Reading

Thank you for taking our Micro Teaching. Our teaching was based on Pre-reading and In- reading. I did ALT "Ittsu".

The objectives of my Pre-reading and In-reading activities
In Pre-reading activity, we got students to expect the content of the story from only the title before students read their textbook. It was very difficult but, some students answerd the question.
In In-reading activities, students tried some T/F questions. T/F questions did after reading the story. Before the questions, we read the text some times and confirmed the charactors. So students had good results.

The strengths and weaknesses of our mini-lesson
The strength of our mini-lesson was to read the story many times. First I read the story and next, students repeated after ALT sentence by sentence. But actually we intended to have students reading aloud after repeating. In the reading aloud, students was standing and when they finished reading, they sat down by turns. And more the first sitting students read aloud again after every students finished. Because some students may pretended to read text.If we did all plan, students read four times. And students were easy to understand the story. If I do the reading lesson in junior high school, I try to get students to read the text as many as possible.
The weakness was predicting the contents. This time, students were university students, but in real situation, students just started studying English! I think our question was too difficult for junior high students.

The Discovery about Teaching
I was helpd by my partner Jasmine in various scean and I felt difficulties to teach someone. Sometimes students respond to the teacher with strange answer. In that time, I don't know I should do. I felt like to understand how to deal with.

This Micro Teaching was a good experience for me. Thank you for reading.

Ittsu,
Thank you for your teaching. I enjoyed your class and learned many things from it. And your reflection was well-written.
You really pretended to be an ALT!!To my surprise, your pronunciation of English was great! And you spoke only English, and Jasmine explained in Japanese. In this respect, you two divided the work well and pulled own weight.
I thought you should have had more time to get students to read or speak English. But after reading your reflection, I understood that you were going to do that. To read many times is important for students in reading lesson, you know.
Anyway you did a good job. And I think it would be a good experience for you. Thank you.

Hi Itsuko! This is Misato!
I enjoyed your class.
First of all when I listened to your voice, I thought your pronounciation of English very nice!!It seems as if I listened to listening CD. Also your paper on blackboard was very nice! It was easy to understand what teacher said. Though I thought students need more reading time, you're going to do, aren't you? I'd like to take your lesson until end.
Thank you for your teaching☆

Hello!
I think you are very nice partners! It is clearly to do each part. Especially, you used English many time in lesson. When the student couldn' t understand what ALT said, Yukari helped us. And Ittsu's pronunciation is very good.
you look like real ALT!
Introduction is also nice idea, but it is little difficult to understand the meaning of "only one" for junior high school student as you wrote.
Anyway, I like your teaching! Thank you for your teaching!

Thank you for your teaching. Your pronunciation was very good! I was really surprised!
I think your class had many times to read for students. But, words practicing time was too long. And, as you wrote, predicing the contents from the title was little difficult for students, I thought.
But I could enjoy your class. Thank you!!

Hi Ittsu! This is Wakame. Thank you for your teaching. I felt that we could learn the sentences and the context steadily in your class. It is because we did reading many times. I also think we should have more images for the story. We imagined the topic at the beginning of the class, but we couldn't imagine contexts of the real story. I think pictures may helpful to imagine it. Anyway your pronunciation ws so good! Please be confident of it! Thank you! See you tomorrow!

Hi,this is rozen.
I think reading activity;you read the text by each sentence and we repeat was very enjoyable.
I didn't satisfy, but I read your blog, there is no way to complain it.
But I thought it is very difficult for students to think what the topic is by the question(the paper which is written the aim of the class is also) with new word.
I think you'd better not to use such topic.
Thank you for your teaching☆

Hi!This is Nakki.Thank you for your teaching!
Reading text book again and again was good for students to get used to English and understand the contents. And your pronunciation was very good!
As you wrote, predicting the story from only the tittle was difficult for students. So if you give some hints, students can predict more easily. For example, students use new words or predict the story from the tittle and them.
Thanks☆

Hello, Jasmin and Ambition.
You had good job in too short time.
Your class like a condensed real class. So I think it was very structed lesson.

At that, I want you to think about below.

I could imagine what you want to do, but it took too long time. That was "Micro" teaching, so should we act and choose some part of teaching?(I can say other groups)

Thanks!

Hi, Ambition! This is Pizza.
I felt expecting the contents from only title was difficult, so I needed more information about story, for example characters.
Thank you for your teaching!

Thank you for your micro teaching! That was very good!!
Your teaching was polite and considerate to students. And how to practice new words was so understandable.A point that translate English into Japanese,or Japanese into English was beneficial for me.
While you tried students to association contents from the textbook, but it was a little difficult for them,I thought.
Anyway,your teaching was very good.I liked it!!Thank you☆

Thank you for your class.
As for your class, the main activity was the learning of new words and the connection word to word. I was sorry that I could not take all your lesson because running out of time.
It should reduce the character what are they and what did they as a papers. I guess you can play for time to wtite or speak.

I am very sorry for late comment. I think the concrete questions very useful for reading, because it needs to read the text carefully and understand it. The class went on naturally, so students will be attracted by the story after the class. Thank you for good teaching your pronunciation was very nice!

Dea First Ambition,
Your lesson was very well organized and I think that Jasmine spoke more English than any of the other JETs and First Ambition was a good ALT. It was a difficult topic and I thought you did an admirable job trying to teach it. Here is one way you can improve your lesson:

Pre-reading: Asking students to guess what the story means from the title “Try to be the only one” was a little difficult. The title is very abstract and I think the question would have been too difficult for the students to answer. Here is one way you can do the pre-reading.
“Today we are going to read a story about a boy” The title of the story is “Try to be the only one”. Here are the new words:
Try
Die
Cried
Cry
Hate
Sun
Left
Baby
Took
Blind
Be born
Mexican American

What kind of boy is this story about? Using the new words, try to guess. For example, one possibility is: “The boy hates the sun”
